The Best Coffee Maker?

Choosing the best coffee maker for your cup of Joe
Americans are crazy about coffee. Most of us can’t start a day without it. Every now and then, your old coffee maker bites the dust and it’s time for a replacement. If you haven’t shopped lately, there are so many methods, sizes and prices, it can be difficult to know how to choose the best coffee maker. When you start to look around, you’ll see prices ranging from $10 to over $200! You may well wonder what makes the $200 coffee maker worth the price. Does it multi-task, doing dishes and watching the kids as it brews? What about the $10 coffee pot? Is it so inferior, or is it just the dependable, but no-frills version? Here are some suggestions on sorting this all out and finding the best coffee maker that suits your preferences.
There are dozens of sites which issue consumer rating reports, which compare coffee makers on a variety of features. Just Google ‘consumer reports coffee makers’ for an extensive list of reviews on the pros and cons of the various types. In addition to organizations, look for coffee websites which offer their own reviews, based on personal use of a particular coffee maker over a period of time. You can sometimes get valuable tidbits on reliability and any quirks on features. Although all reviewers may not agree on which is the best coffee maker, matching your own needs is what matters most.
Consider which features are important to you. For example, if you don’t want to mess with the coffeepot in the morning, you just want it ready when you wake up, you’ll want the programmable type with an automatic shutoff. You just pour, drink and walk away. Even the most inexpensive coffee makers usually have a pause and serve feature, for impatient coffee drinkers. It’s best to allow most of the pot to brew before using the pause feature, or the coffee might be too strong.
When trying to determine which is the best coffee maker for you, capacity is definitely a consideration. Standard electric drip brew coffee makers come in sizes ranging from 1 to 12 cups. Some manufacturers have introduced the ’small batch’ feature, which means you can make four cups in a 12 cup coffee maker that produces an equal strength batch of coffee. Without this feature, those 4 cups will result in a weak cup of Joe. Expect to pay a premium for this feature. If your budget isn’t comfortable with the higher price, you may be better off buying two sizes of coffee makers.
You wouldn’t think that finding the best coffee maker should be so difficult, but hey, we’re talking about our favorite beverage! There’s more.
If you’re one who likes really strong coffee, consider a vacuum coffee pot or a French press.
A French press tends to leave some silt, or fine grounds, that some people don’t like. You can remedy this by using a small paper filter around the press. If you like really hot coffee, you’ll need to reheat a cup made in the French press, as the coffee cools considerably by the time you’re ready to pour.
The vacuum and thermal carafe coffee makers don’t rely on a hot plate to keep the coffee warm, as do the conventional models. Many connoisseurs consider the vacuum and thermal methods to deliver the best flavor. The more expensive units hold the temperature at 200 degrees, which gourmet coffee brewers say results in the optimum flavor retention.
Do your research before you rush out to the store or purchase online. Trying to find the best coffee maker for you won’t happen by just reading the blurbs on the boxes!
Expresso Machine Still Cool?

I love coffee, and it would be a rare day when I was not drinking it whether I was away from home or sitting at my desk. However, I know that some like coffee for the taste, but they also need that jolt of caffeine in the morning, or as a pick me up in the afternoon. They may not have the time or inclination to sip coffee as I do, so they go for a shot of espresso to get them moving in a short amount of time. Those who don’t want to make a stop for their morning drink can often find an espresso machine to have in their home.
Unlike a large cup of regular coffee, espresso has a lot of caffeine in a drink that would come in something that same size as a shot glass you would see in a bar. The espresso machine can make this amount of liquid very quickly, and often it is not much of a hassle. The grounds used in an espresso machine are much finer than what you would normally put in your coffee pot. The grounds are often from very dark, robust beans to get the best flavor possible.
An espresso machine can heat the small amount of needed water very quickly, and then it is forced through the very fine grounds. In most cases, a good espresso comes out in about a half a minute total. There are varying degrees of richness and smoothness that some like, and that means they will have their grounds and their espresso machine set up just to the perfect specifications so they are getting the same brew each day. Espresso can be a bit thick, and even a bit frothy, but that is up to each person’s individual taste for the most part.
If you want to buy an espresso machine for your home, you are in luck. These are more popular than ever, and it is becoming common to see these sitting next to a regular coffee maker in many kitchens. While most still love a great cup of coffee, they may save that for the weekend when they have more time to enjoy it. With an espresso machine, they know they can get what they need within minutes and be out the door and on with what they have to do. You can find these machines in stores and online, and finding a great one will be rather easy.
Cheap TV as a Gift Idea

A cheap TV makes a great gift idea for kids – and cheap doesn’t have to mean poor quality
These days, kids and teens have come to expect that they must have a personal TV in their bedroom. However, the new flat screen televisions may cost a bit more than you can afford for this indulgence. If your kids have been dropping thinly-disguised ‘hints’ for their own TV, there’s a way to make this happen without busting the budget. While they still have access to the nice, big family flat screen TV in the living or family room, a cheap TV is quite satisfactory for watching in their bedroom. So where can you find a quality cheap TV?
You have a few options. If you’re looking for a new cheap TV, go to the discount electronics store and look over the selections. There are the small, four inch screen TVs which operate on either electricity or batteries. Kids think these are really cool, probably because they’re accustomed to all the tiny electronic gadgets they already have.
These are also a good remedy for boredom when there’s a power outage. This type of cheap TV will run for about 4 hours on batteries. If you live in an area where winter power outages happen frequently and may go on for days, the cost of batteries can add up. In my rural location, this is a problem. If you’re in a metro area, this isn’t usually a concern. This type of cheap TV solution is also good for camping or fishing trips. You might want to wrap up an 8-pack of batteries with this gift and let the kids know they are responsible for future battery needs.
The battery-electric TV also makes a good gift idea for Dad, if he’s into fishing or camping adventures.
Another cheap TV option may be found at the thrift shops. Yes, indeed, if you have two or three kids, vying for the personal TV, this can be the way to go. Check out the selection at the Salvation Army or Goodwill type stores. They usually have several on hand, in a variety of sizes, often at unbelievably low prices. For example, you can probably pick up a 19 inch TV for about $25! Now that’s a cheap TV. For less than the price of the new, battery or electric powered TV, all three kids can have a TV in each of their rooms. The thrift store clerk will plug the TV in so you can see the picture quality and be sure it works. If the tag says “sold as is”, it’s probably not a good choice. Sometimes, it may be marked as such because a dial or knob is missing, or the antenna is broken. If you can make the repair, it might still be a good deal. If not, move on to another.
Another place to find a cheap TV is through the classifieds or at garage sales. These can be great deals. The seller might have recently upgraded to a fancier model, although there is absolutely nothing wrong with his old one.
So there you have it. Your kids will be happy and you’ll have saved a ton of money!
Affordable Digital Cameras

Smart shopping counts for a lot, but it is especially important when you are looking for affordable digital cameras. Affordable electronics in general follow pretty much the same trend. The new stuff is always really expensive, but once you wait six months or so, it comes down in price. This is definitely the case with affordable digital cameras. When I bought my first electronic camera, it cost a fortune. I don’t remember exactly what the resolution was, but it was much lower than the typical camera resolution now. Back then, however, it was cutting edge. It didn’t take as good a picture as any phone camera will nowadays, yet it cost as much as top of the line professional cameras.
Nowadays, if you are a smart shopper, you can find an affordable digital camera well within your price range. A lot of people start by looking for used cameras. Used affordable digital cameras are a good idea if you know a few things about cameras. You need to be able to check them out to make sure the lenses aren’t scratched, the mechanics work well, and everything is in order. Then again, if you don’t know what you’re doing, buying a used camera can get you into trouble. Getting a really expensive camera for only a hundred dollars is not a deal if it turns out to be a lemon!
Even without buying used, you can find what you need for a good price. The key to buying affordable digital cameras is knowing the hype from the substance. Take resolution, for example. Having a high resolution digital image is a good thing, but it only has to be so high. If you only plan on taking standard photographs and do not plan on reprocessing them, blowing them up, or editing them in other ways, you can actually get a good image with a pretty low resolution. This will save you a bundle. You can also save money by giving up on the newest features. You don’t need sophisticated image detection software, zoom, and all that nonsense. If you want zoom, you can always go buy a zoom lens later. The typical amateur photographer will not be able to tell the difference between the picture he gets from a top-of-the-line digital camera and an affordable one. Do yourself a favor and don’t spend the extra money for fancy functions you won’t even use.
Then again, there are some things you don’t want to compromise on. You should make sure to buy your affordable digital camera from a reputable company which offers a warranty on it. You should also make sure that it has sufficient memory for all the pictures you want to take, or that memory sticks are easy to buy and reasonably affordable.
Blockbuster Video Rentals
December 16, 2008 by CoolStuff · Leave a Comment
Hey did you see that one movie with that one guy who had that gun? If I had a nickel for every time I heard that spiel while working in a video store; well you get the picture. Although that question is always rather amusing, it’s bizarre at the same time. The truth is that people love movies. They basically can’t seem to live without them. In fact, I’ll bet that you watched a movie within the last 24 hours. I know I did. It was “Halloween H2O.” Yeah, I always love the horror flicks. One thing I did learn after working in a video chain for over six years is that people can’t get enough movies, and this epidemic is not changing any time soon. That’s why Blockbuster Video rentals are everywhere you turn. This is the largest video chain in the country.
What Blockbuster Video rentals are sitting on your DVD player right now? Are you an action flick fiend or a romantic comedy nut? When it comes to my household, we get the whole spectrum. Although I love horror and action films, my wife goes gaga over romantic comedies. Then there’s the teenage girl who of course watches teen flicks and the seven year old who’s still stuck on cartoons. Yep, we get the whole store of Blockbuster Video rentals in this house. I can recall back in the day when everyone would head out to the local Blockbuster in search of that new release that was virtually impossible to find. Okay, what am I talking about; they all still do this. Well, except for me and a few others, who have decided to take up Blockbuster Video rentals online. This is the future, people. Hey, it’s not a bad thing. In my opinion it’s the bomb! No more fighting for a parking space. No more maneuvering through the dense crowds. And certainly no more waiting in line. All of these things can drive a sane person crazy. Trust me; I worked there. People will go nuts over movie rentals. I actually saw a few fights take place. Thank God for the Internet. At least now you can browse through cyberspace for Blockbuster Video rentals, and you know what; there’s always room for more customers. If you’re interested in acquiring your Blockbuster Video rentals via the World-Wide-Web, then I suggest you get online. Feel free to reserve films before they even come out. Hey, it’s a whole new world of entertainment out there.

Garmin GPS V
December 13, 2008 by CoolStuff · Leave a Comment
Nothing stinks more than getting lost! There have been several occasions in my life where I’ve found myself driving, but clueless as to where I was. I’m sure you can relate. And if you’re like most of us, you probably pulled the trusty map out of the glove compartment to get an idea of where you actually were. Sadly you then realized that the map was a general U.S. map and had no details of the small town you’re in. Yeah, that’s when things really get fun. After a bit of driving in circles, searching for the interstate, you make the decision to pull over at a gas station and ask for directions. Just make certain you remember what they tell you or you’ll be back at square one. Now, if you’re still grappling with situations like this, you truly shouldn’t be. Not with technology such as Garmin GPS V at your fingertips.
I think all vehicles should now come standard with GPS navigation systems. It just makes sense. This is an accessory we all need from time to time. Especially if we’re headed out on a road trip. It’s pretty easy to lose your way in that labyrinth of roads and highways out there. But, with a Garmin GPS V you don’t ever have to. Even if you miss your turn or exit, the GPS system will redirect you and set you back on the right course of travel. The first time I used a Garmin GPS V I was shocked. I fell utterly in love with this high-tech mapping system. I didn’t even have to look at the little screen. I simply punched in my starting address and the destination address. The GPS system informed me of how many miles I would have to travel and what time I should expect to arrive. As I drove, it spoke to me and told me what exits to take. And even when I wasn’t able to take a particular ramp due to construction, the Garmin GPS V quickly re-routed. Now I never travel anywhere in a vehicle without my trusty GPS system.
A Garmin GPS V can assist you regardless of where you reside. These innovative devices have the entire globe programmed into them. All you need to know is your starting coordinates and your destination address, and you’re good to go. I guarantee you won’t get lost ever again. Take a Garmin GPS V on your next road tripping adventure.
Remote Control Car Ferrari Enzo, Cool
December 12, 2008 by CoolStuff · Leave a Comment
Over the holidays, good friends of ours drove to Grand Forks, which is just a couple of hours away, and just on the other side of the Canadian/American border. They wanted to take advantage of the fantastic post-Thanksgiving sales and spend some time together as a family.
These particular friends are what I consider to be power shoppers. They seem to intuitively know where to shop, when to hit the stores and make a beeline to the very best deals to be had.
They returned home laden down with shopping bags and boxes galore! They were able to fully stock their liquor cabinet, fill up their already packed closets, and bring gifts for everyone in our family to enjoy.
One of the absolutely best purchases they made was an incredible remote control car for their youngest son. Regularly retailing for as much as $250 US, they were able to get a steep discount, checking out at a mere $79!! This remote control car is cool – Ferrari Enzo. The range from which you can control the vehicle is unbelievable, and what is more, the remote control controls the headlights and turn signal lights!
Our family had to make a special trip over to our friends’ house just to have a look at this dream-come-true remote control car, for ourselves! Our own son was dumbfounded. He had never even seen any vehicle, even close to the likes of this remote control car. This baby sported an all leather interior with working horn and headlights, and is modeled after a the real Ferrari ultimate sports car. The paint job is a sweet racing candy apple red. My son was in absolute awe and drooling with envy. Without him saying a word, we already know what toy has moved to the top of our son’s list of wants! We only hope we’ll be as fortunate when finding a similar deal of our own.
In the past, we have done our best to find the best remote control toys for our kids. Last year, we were delighted to find one of hottest toys of the season – Robosapien – at a mere fraction of the original cost of up to $140. We just happened to be in a local store, just after Christmas. Some fortunate child must have received two of this much longed for toy and one was returned to the store shortly thereafter. We ended up with the extra one, paying a mere $20 to account for it previously having been opened. Upon arriving home, we were pleased to discover that on top of the already ridiculously low price, our new toy also contained at least $10 worth of brand new batteries! Our son was thrilled with his new toy and spent hours programming it to carry out a host of various tasks.
Sadly, the novelty didn’t take long to wear off, and Robosapien now sits on a shelf collecting dust. All our son can talk about now is getting a remote control car, just like his friend. As parents, we are torn between knowing how quickly he’ll move on to the next latest and greatest toy, and wanting to fulfill our son’s every childhood fantasy. In the end, we know, that all the toys will be just a blur. We can only hope that the joy that these toys temporarily bring, will long remain a happy, childhood memory.

Massage Chair, Cool This Year?
If you have never tried a massage chair, you really need to. I was skeptical of massager chairs until recently. I was dating a massage therapist at the time, you see, so I could get all of the massages that I wanted. I was in heaven for about eight months, needless to say, but when the relationship ended, I found that I couldn’t afford the price of massages. I had figured that massage chairs couldn’t possibly duplicate the experience, but when I tried them out, I was surprised by how close they came. They really are a good option if you don’t want to have to schedule or pay for individual massages.
Executive massage chairs just get better and better all the time. The first time I saw a massage chair was about 10 years ago, and it was not all that good. It was in some kind of electronic gadgets and gizmos store, and the feeling that it gave me was very unnatural. The roller seemed to press my back, and the shiatsu massage device was more painful than soothing.
That is why I was so surprised when I came into the store and tried a massage chair a few months ago. I was in heaven. They had everything. Of course, they have all the standard features like vibrating action, heating elements behind the cushions, rollers, and shiatsu massage, but they went beyond that. The thing about the modern massage chair is how well you can customize it. You can use harder pressure or softer pressure, faster or slower massages, and even change the height that the different massage rollers are set at. All in all, it is a great experience and one worth trying for yourself.
Of course, a massage chair can not give you all the advantages of massage therapy. It cannot target and work out individual kinks in your back, and has no way of knowing what tensions you are holding and where they are. There is still nothing that beats lying on a massage table and getting worked over from head to toe. Still, when you are on the go, when you do not have a regular schedule with time for massage appointments, or if you don’t want to spend money to hire a masseuse, A massage chair can be just what the doctor ordered. No matter how you feel when you sit down, you’ll feel that much better when you get up again. So yeah, massage chairs are cool this year.
New Toys Are Fun For Kids and Adults Too
December 8, 2008 by CoolStuff · Leave a Comment
Getting great new toys is always fun for kids, but you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy them. The other day, for example, I got my youngest son new Star Wars toys. I remember that I used to collect Star Wars figurines when I was a kid, but I haven’t seen any in years. I suppose that they are still in my mother’s basement somewhere, gathering dust, but I don’t think I will be able to sort through to find them anytime soon. Enjoying my son’s Star Wars action figures with him, however, is more than enough fun for me. I have never seen a kid who loves getting a new toy quite as much as he does. Every time he gets something new, he will play for it for days and days on end. It is really something to watch.
These new toys are no exception. When he got the action figures, he immediately started working out an elaborate story involving them. He would have them talk to each other, fight, make up, and go to war. Sometimes it would end tragically, but usually the hero would win and the villain would be vanquished forever. It was always a lot of fun to watch him play, and sometimes he would even let me join in.
Of course, I like to get new toys of my own from time to time. A lot of the time, adults do not like to see their new electronic gadgets called toys, but that is just what they are. I am more honest with myself about it. I know that my razer cell phone is a new toy, as are my personal organizer, my surround sound stereo, and my electric guitar. Just because I’m a grownup doesn’t mean that I don’t have some childlike desires. Playing with a brand new shiny toy is always a joy no matter what age you are.
Many grownups don’t let themselves enjoy new toys. That is why I like birthday so much. It gives me a chance to give the people that I love things that they would secretly want if they let themselves have them. For example, basically every birthday by my brother a new video game. He loves video gaming, but feels kind of guilty about it. He doesn’t feel like he should spend his time playing games, but when I get them for him, he is always willing to give in.
Creative Toys Are Cool This Year
December 7, 2008 by CoolStuff · Leave a Comment
A lot of people think of toys as simply a way for children to pass time. This is a shame. When parents put their children in front of a video game system or in front of the TV for hours and hours, they aren’t allowing those children to have all the full benefits of playing. Don’t get me wrong – there’s nothing wrong with video games or television in moderation. The problem is that, if young children don’t play with creative toys, they will not develop many of the skills that they will need when they are older. Creative learning toys help children develop a wide number of skills. They develop spatial reasoning, imagination, social skills, As well as dexterity, to name but a few.
When selecting creative children’s toys, a parent has to be creative themselves. Figuring out what creative toys are right for your child can be a little bit difficult. Everyone who has ever given birth to a baby or played with a young child is probably aware of the fact that they have a strong tastes as anyone else. The right creative toy for one child might be a complete wrong one for another. Some kids love complex toys that beep, flash, and buzz. Other children love simpler, creative wooden toys. Sometimes, a doll or even a pair of socks is enough to set up a whole game of make-believe. It is all a matter of providing a child the opportunity to experiment with different toys and begin to explore the world around them.
Of course, buying your child creative toys is only the first step. Much more important than what playthings your child has is whether or not they have a parent who plays along with them. Not only is playing with your child a way of bonding with him or her, but it is also a way of helping that child to learn a variety of skills. From playing, children learn how to relate socially to other people. They also learn more advanced skills. Reading to your child from picture books is a great way to bond and exercise their imagination. Then, you and your kid can make up imagination games based on the stories in the book. You can even help your kid to write his or her own stories. Engaging your children in more complex projects not only gives them new ways to use their creative toys, but also lets them develop self-confidence and patience, two valuable skills.
